As someone with an education and training background, I could talk at length on the importance of gaining qualifications and experiences necessary for taking on a new role. However, I have found that my most important and career-defining learning experiences have happened when I said 'yes' to a new opportunity or challenge which was way out of my comfort zone or existing skill set. Say yes now and figure it out later - you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Company

What do you like about your job and the company?

I am passionate about creating high-quality educational resources and learning experiences, whether it be an in-depth veterinary course on Hyperthyroidism for our Dechra Academy, or an internal training module on Import & Export Compliance. I enjoy combining my expertise in adult learning and graphic design to create truly engaging content, regardless of the topic.

Greatest achievements

Dechra offers flexible working, promotes a positive work-life balance through its THRIVE wellbeing programme, and supports opportunities for professional development. This has really made me feel valued as an employee and enabled me to achieve my personal and professional goals. My personal achievements this year include qualifying for and running the Boston Marathon, winning the Apocalypse Ultramarathon, and working with The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) to create their new Drum Kit syllabus. In terms of professional development, I recently completed the first year of my masters degree in Education Technology which has been fully-funded and supported by Dechra.

Be Curious. A lot of people are 'lucky" - but what I have noticed is that the best opportunities arrive when we are curious and pay attention to what is around us. Learn something that doesn't directly relate to what you are doing. Many of my chances came because I was open to learning more about something, and then was prepared to take advantage of the opportunity when it arrived. Curious people tend to build stronger relationships, partly they ask genuine questions. They tend to understand things more, because they ask until they figure things out. I also find them to have better attitudes and be more fun to work with.

By performing similar tasks repeatedly you will likely get better, more robust and secure at it. However, allowing yourself to get out of your comfort zone and dive into a new territory you will always find new areas to grow and experiences that enrich you, both personally and professionally. Sharing knowledge, listening, brainstorming with others and building your network opens many doors.

I would have missed a great opportunity to come to work feeling radiant every day, if I had closed myself off to new things, that seemed outside my field of study. Move freely among the different areas of the company, be ready to help, and when asked for help, go above and beyond. And always follow through on what you agree to do! Be someone others can trust, have empathy, and never get stuck in 'it's always been done this way.' It's like becoming a problem solver, the kind of person you'd want on your team, someone you can trust to get things done. Roll up your sleeves and don't be fussy!
